General APAS Installations

Hello Thomas,

Thank you for your message. There are no secrets to the calibration process used by the Ariel Performance Analysis System (APAS). Typically, most Ariel users utilize the well published Direct Linear Transformation (DLT) algorithm for both 2D and 3D calibrations. In both situations, the X, Y, and Z coordinates are all measured (in user-defined units) relative to a single origin.

Two-dimensional calibration requires a minimum of 4 coplanar points that encompass the area of activity to be analyzed. Obviously, the activity should then take place in the calibrated plane for the most accurate results.

Three-dimensional analysis requires a minimum of 6 non-coplanar points (though 18 to 24 points are recommended) that encompass the area of activity to be analyzed. There is no specific calibration object that must be used.
Often a rectangular calibration frame is used for this purpose. Others may hang strings from the ceiling with each string having several calibration points. Sometimes and object in the field of view may be used for calibration points... for example, designated points on a treadmill. The only requirement is that the coordinates of the points are measured accurately from a single origin.

The calibration points are usually recorded by all cameras before and after the desired activity. This ensures a good calibration view even if the camera is bumped or moved during the activity. Then during the digitizing process, each calibration point is digitized by the user. These digitized coordinates are then input into the DLT algorithm for the calibration process.

Ariel Dynamics Inc was also the first to introduce a Physical Parameter Transformtion (PPT) algorithm that can be used for standard 3D analysis or with panning cameras. Panning camera analysis is performed with out any extra hardware but simply by using two calibration cubes.... one at each end of the panning range. This work was presented at an XIV International Society of Biomechanics meeting in Paris, 1993.

I hope this helps to answer your questions.

Sincerely,

John Probe

ADI: The APAS can be used with any video camera. The only requirement is
that the video is captured to Microsoft compatible AVI format for
digitizing. Most all APAS customers use standard "off-the-shelf" commercial
quality video camcorders. These record in standard NTSC (60 Hz) video
format. This is fast enough to quantify most all human motion. If you wish
to study ball impacts, bats, golf clups etc. then you would require a higher
speed camera. The same APAS system could be used for the analysis.

ADI: The APAS can be used to quatify motion of ANY video recorded activity.
The APAS is a 3D video-based movement analysis system which accurately
quantifies function and provides objective data the professional may use to
justify or evaluate treatment. Areas of successful application for the APAS
include human performance, injury and rehabilitation assessment,
quantification of loss for compensation claims, equipment and product
testing and development, determination of potential or actual risks for
products and activities in liability litigation, as well as applied research
in the areas of orthopedic medicine, therapeutics, and physical training.

Dear Dr. Gideon Ariel,

first of all, a huge thanks to you for you reply. After I checked the first link I've realized to whom I sent email, and from whom I got the reply. I lost a word, and still cann't believe in it. Like Bob Beamon, who made the historical jump, you made a miracle in human motion analysis ever. I'm going to ask my adviser to contact you. Once again, thank you very much for your time and for your genious contribution in science.

Hi Tony:
Was nice to hear from you.
The procedure to generate a site code is as follows:
1. You get into the APAS system as shown below:

2. Then you need to dubble click on any of the icons. For example on the APASview to receive the following: You must press the enter key before the module is totally executed. You do not wait for the module to be executed. You press the APASview and in less then one second press the enter key once or twice.
You will get the following:

3. Now you press on the "display site code" and receive the following:

4.  You press "Yes" you do not want to see the license agreement unless you are bored.
You will get the following by pressing 'Yes"

5. The next is only to generate the code by pressing: "Display Site Code" By doing it you will get the following:

6. You need to email us the site code shown.
Then we will generate the site key for you to insert in the document above.

We must use this method since it is un beatable since it is hardware dependent. In most cases you must do it on our own hardware.

But in your case I will release this requirement. This way no one can copy us including the Chinease.

Many try to copy the code everyday but they cannot. In fact it is so smart that they think they did but all the results they get from the APAS are off by a random factor and all their publication are erroneous.

Hope this work for you my friend.

Let me know.

Hello xx,

Thank you for your message.  I will explain below

For each segment, there is a center of mass location as defined as a
fractional distance between the endpoints. The C.M. is then defined as:

      SUM(mass[i]*xyz[i]) / SUM(mass[i])

If you look at the SEQUENCE information for a project & click the SEGMENTS
button, one by one all the segments defined in the project along with the
joints defining the segments, a fractional distance between the endpoints for
the segment CG, and the mass of the segment normally expressed as a percent of
the total body mass. You have the option to use  default values or you can specify
whatever segmental model you wish.

The center of mass for the entire body is then defined as the average of the
segmental center of masses weighted by the fractional mass of each segment

Thus:
      Xcom=SUM(mass[i]*x[i]) / SUM(mass[i])
      Ycom=SUM(mass[i]*y[i]) / SUM(mass[i])
      Xcom=SUM(mass[i]*z[i]) / SUM(mass[i])

where the sum is over all segments and x[i],y [i], z[i]  are the [x,y,z]
coordinates of the ith segment cm, and mass[i] is the mass of the ith segment.

I hope this helps to answer your question.

Sincerely,

John Probe

Subject: CG Questions

Hello!!!!

My name is xx  and I work as an undegraduate research assistant at the biomechanics lab at the Wingate institute in Israel.

I am having difficulties in understanding the procedure for calculation of whole body CG location, displacement, etc. and could not find relevant information in your manuals.

My basic question - how do I accomplish this task?

I apoligize for consuming your time on such a basic question - but hey ,what can one do?

thanx in advance

Subject: Model points?

Gideon -
I am at the point of digitizing a trial, and I've got a few questions
for you.
1) What points do i use for toe & heel? Right now i have the "foot"
point in twice.

ADI:  The standard points use only a "toe" and "ankle" marker.  However, if you would like to define the foot a little better, you can add an "extra" point for the heel and therefore represent the foot with a triangle shape.  The process of adding "extra" points is explained in the pull-down help file within the Digitize module.  I believe we did this when you came to our office.

2) C7 marker id? & Vertex marker id? How do i change these, or what do i
use to identify these points?

ADI:  These are not standard points so they would have to be added as "extra" points also.  The APAS allows you to define any points that you desire for digitizing.  You could start with the SYSTEM DEFINED points to label the standard points and connections.  Then switch to the USER DEFINED points to add the extra points and connections.  Once you  have done this for the first sequence, this information can be copied for all future sequences by using the "READ" option in the Sequence Information menu.

3) Does the program  have segment parameters for both male & female
athletes? Or do i have to input all segment parameters on my own?

ADI:  The APAS software does not distinguish between male and female athletes.  Once the points are defined using the System Defined points, the APAS software (by default) uses data from DEMPSTER for the segmental parameters.  The user has the option to change these parameters at any time by selecting the SEGMENTS button from the Sequence Information Menu.  If you use the USER-DEFINED points option, then you would have to enter your own information.

4) How do i identify segments, such as "L shank" is connected between "L
knee" and "L ankle"?

ADI:  These are standard connections and are input automatically when using the System Defined points.  When using the User-Defined points, you would have to make the desired connections using the SEGMENTS button from the Sequence Information menu.  Each point can be connected with up to 5 other points as long as they are lower number.  For example, point 1 does not connect to any other point since there are no points lower than number 1.  Point 2 could connect to point 1.  Point 3 could connect to point 1 and/or 2.... etc.

5) How does the program calculate TBCM location once i am done
digitizing?

ADI:  The APAS software utilizes the segmental information to compute the CG of the digitized points.  If you digitized the entire body, the calculated value would be the CG of the entire body.  If you only digitized the arm, the calculated CG would be the CG of the arm segments.

Thanks so much! ~Kat

Hi Al
Nice to speak with you.

In order to use a laptop, you must meet the following requirements:
1. Be using APAS XP (I am sure you are)
2. Have a laptop speed of over 1.0 gh (higher the better) 3. Be using Windows 2000 or XP Home (XP Professional does not work- there problem with microsoft and multiple grabbing in Professional) 4. You must have a frame grabbing card for each camera. This means two pcmcia cards (if your slots are stacked, you need one with a dongle.) You cannot plug two cameras into one card, even though it may have multiple ports. Even plugging to cameras into one card may preclude your getting a signal from the IEEE port.

The only time I had a problem was when first attempting to do capture with a laptop. It took me months of research to discover it was windows XP. They did not carry the ability to do multiple cameras. THey later fixed the problem in the home edition but to the best of my knowledge, not the Professional version. I have also had occasional problems with firewires over 15 feet in multiple camera situations (depends upon the power of the computer). However, I have used firewires up to 75 feet on a strong desktop.

I use laptop capture, three cameras every day of the week and sports at 5 cameras on the desktop (have not gone to 6 yet). All work without fail.

I strongly suspect your version of windows. Please let me know and feel free to write me directly.
Bob

Subject: questions

> Hi John,

> I have three questions.

> 1. Are APAS and APAS/Gait the same? If not, what is

> the difference?

>

ADI: These are two different products. The APAS is the Basic Analysis System and supports 2D/3D analysis with automatic digitizing capabilities.

The APAS Gait is an optional software module that supports the industry standard marker sets (Helen Hayes and Keith Vaughn etc) for lower body human gait analysis.

> 2. How do I connect the markers if I use Helen Hayes

> market set to get hip and knee flextion/extension,

> abduction/adduction, and rotation using APAS?

>

ADI: If you studies require this information, it would be recommended to use the APAS-GAIT software option. If the Basic APAS is utilized, you would have to define the marker sets and export the data to a spreadsheet to manually perform the necessary calculations.

> 3. I am going to measure joint motion, EMG, and ground reaction force

> at the same time. How do I synchronize those three signals?

>

ADI: The easiest method for measuring these signals would be to use the Ariel Analog Module with a force plate and EMG electrodes connected. These signals would be automatically syncrhonized in this manner. They could also be synchronized with the video data using a common signal that is seen by both mediums. For example, the contact of the foot on the force platform could be seen by the video and also detected on the force plate signals.

Hello Yosef,

Thank you for your message.  The Basic APAS generates stick figures by connecting the user-specified points.  The Ariel 3D Renderer software module can be used to superimpose a human skeleton or cylinders on the stick figure.  Additionally, the image can be simultaneously rotated and animated through the digitized action.  Traces can also be placed on any point where the path of the point is color coded according to the velocity.

All the product information on the APAS is available on the Ariel internet site (/).  Specifically, information on the APAS 3D Renderer program can be found at the following link.

You can even download the full version of the APAS software (including Renderer and Gait) for a FREE 30-day evaluation.  The download instructions are listed here.

Please review the information and feel free to contact us for any additional questions.

I have heard of your products before and was under the impression that they rendered only stick figures. It seems as though they are render 3 dimensional figures. Please elablorate if I am correct as to changes and advancements.

      Thank You,

ADI:  Yes, when using the CAPDV software module, each camera should be
connected to a single card.  This allows "real-time" video capture direct to
the computer hard disk.  This module also allows you to synchronize and
trim all images simultaneously if desired.

If you have recorded images "off-site" or away from the computer, the best
method would be to connect a single camera to any port and use the Studio DV
software module to capture the video.  Make certain that you do not use the
"movie" options of the Studio DV software, you just need to capture the
video and then exit.  Open the TRIM module to trim and synchronize as the
next step.

> 2. Can you recommend a good tutorial or reference on the experimental and
> analytical methodology that we should know to get good results from this
> kind of biomechanical experimentation?
>
ADI:  There are several methods to learn the APAS software.  First, you can
view download the manuals direct from the Ariel internet site.  Second,
there is a tutorial (still in progress) on the web site that will take you
through the basic steps of an analysis.  Third, you can use the pull-down
help screens.  The manuals are actually a full printout of the help files.

> 3. Do we try to mount the lights on the camera, else how do we mount them.
> How close to the camera does the light need to be?
>
ADI:  The reflective markers are made with a special retro-reflective tape.
This tape reflects light back in the same plane as transmitted.  Therefore,
the closer you can get the light to the camera viewing axis, the more
visible the markers will be.  You can demonstrate this by placing a marker
in the room and holding the light at arms length.  Slowly move the light
towards your eye while watching the marker.  You will see that when the
light is close to your eye, the marker appears the brightest.

I believe, there should be a mounting bracket that is included with the
light that allows the light to be mounted to the tripod and then the camera
mounts above the bracket.

> 4. My recollection is that the downloading of the software to my office
> computer is straightforward, after which I have to get a code of some
kind.
> Is that correct?
>
ADI:  If you plan to install workstation software on other computers, you
can install directly from the APAS CD-ROM that was included with your system
or you can download the software from the internet.  In the blue folder
included with the computer, you should have instructions for installing
workstation software.  I have attached the sheet in case you do not have it.

> 5. I downloaded and printed the entire set of documentation I found on the
> web site. It doesn't seem to have anything on CAPDV. Am I missing
something
> or is the use obvious.
>
ADI:  The CAPDV module is relatively new so the manual for this has not made
it to the internet yet.  You can use the pull-down help files in the CAPDV
software module.  Or, if you desire, I could attach the manual to an e-mail
message.  Just let me know.

> 6. Question 5 again with regard to other programs in the package for which
> there is no chapter in the documentation, for example, the EMG Module.
>
ADI:  The EMG module is actually a subset of the DISPLAY module.  Early in
the development stages, the EMG module was separate.  In your version of
software, everything that is included in the EMG module is also included in
the DISPLAY module.  In other words, you don't really need the EMG module.
The EMG module will actually be deleted from the APAS in the near future.

Hello Laura,

Thank you for your interest in the Ariel Performance Analysis System (APAS).  The APAS is a 3D video-based movement analysis system which accurately quantifies function and provides objective data the professional may use to justify or evaluate treatment.  Areas of successful application for the APAS include human performance, injury and rehabilitation assessment, quantification of loss for compensation claims, equipment and product testing and development, determination of potential or actual risks for products and activities in liability litigation, as well as applied research in the areas of orthopedic medicine, therapeutics, and physical training.

The APAS integrates state-of-the-art computer and video processing hardware with specialized software modules that perform data collection, analysis, and presentation.  Objective quantifiable documentation is provided for both 2-Dimensional and 3-Dimensional analysis.  Specific points of interest can be digitized with user intervention or automatically using contrasting markers.  Stick figures are then generated and can be synchronized with kinematics data.  Additionally, up to 32 channels of analog data (i.e. force platform, EMG, goniometers etc.) can be synchronized with the kinematics data.

The APAS product information can be found on the Ariel internet site (/).  The direct address to several areas that might be of interest are listed below.

The APAS was originally developed around sports and Olympic athletes where
markers were not allowed.  Thus, the APAS is ideally suited for the 2D
applications that you mention since no markers are required for the
analysis.  Additionally, the video can be recorded "in-the-field" using
standard camcorders and then brought back to the lab for analysis.  Or if
you prefer, the software can also operate on a notebook computer so the
analysis can be performed on-site.

The APAS product information can be found on the Ariel internet site

HI Gideon/John

Thanks for the weekend reply. Which files do I download off the
site, is it the full APASlight? or is there C3d files somewhere? I
could not find them. The file I originally unzipped was emailed from
John, not off the site.

Cheers Steve

Hi Steve:
The fact that it is single file in a zip might cause the problems. What
happened when you just download new rev from our web site and intstall it?
I am in Texas now but on Monday I am going to put a new revision that
will fix all these little things that happened on few computers.
Let me know

Hi John

Yes I extracted the single c3d file into the same directory as the
older file. The same thing happened it would start for about half a
second putting up an "untitled C3D" banner accross the top and then
all dissapear, no error mesage, no programme etc. I move the old
file back in and it worked fine, swapped them around and no go, then
the old file back again and it worked fine. There was only the C3D
file included in the zip file, should there be any support files
also, eg library files etc?

Dear John I will remove the computer from the rest of the system and transport it home to allow a modem connection with your system. If you could please let us know your GMT so a mutual time can be set up. Perth in Western Australia is at GMT +8.00. Sincerely Don Gordon Electronic/Computer Technician Human Movement Department University of Western Australia

If possible, we would like to avoid having the hard drive sent to our office. Just the shipping charges will cost more than the drive is worth! Additionally, it opens the possibility for loss or damage during shipment. It also means that your "down-time" will be several weeks instead of several days.

Is it possible to connect to a fax line in the University? Or, possibly to move the computer to another location that supports the modem connection (home or another office)?

Based on your description, it appears that we could correct the problem over the modem in 15 or 20 minutes for no cost (other than the phone charges). Please let me know if this is a possibility!

John Probe

Dear Sir/Madam Currently we are running the Ariel APAS-CES software on a AST Bravo 486/25 BIOS Rel 1.10 with 4 MByte of RAM. The system has been performing smoothly for numerous years until now. The system boots to the DOS menu where the APAS-CES software is selected. The software continues to load until the sysmenu.exe needs to be executed. At this stage the system sounds a short beep and hangs with a blank screen. If you use Ctrl+Break, the menu appears. The sysmenu.exe file is 167,138 bytes in size and is dated 3-26-96. If any of the software is selected using the APAS pull down menu, the number 14000 briefly flashes on the screen followed by the system hanging. A reboot is required at this stage. Can you give us any possible solution to the above. Yours Sincerely Don Gordon Electronic/Computer Technician Human Movement Department University of Western Australia

Hello Gideon,

No problem all went well with 9.1. (actually 9.0 installed OK this morning
- no problem with setup. I don't think I did anything different from
yesterday - I just ran setup again from my temp directory.)

Any idea of the cost of Computer Board Inc. A/D converter?

You had better tell me how to pay for the APAS software - because if I
don't spend the money very soon they (the uni) will take it back. I was
at the AIS (Australian Institute of Sport) about a week ago. An ex-student
of mine is using the APAS system for kinematic analysis of various track
and field athletes. He's happy with it. I trust his judgement - he was my
best student. I don't have the time over the next month to give it a full
test drvie myself. So let me know the details and I'll organise the
payment.

Regards, Kevin.

It works so fine on the APAS98 but is not accepted on APAS-dos.
Are the code same for the APAS98 and APAS-dos?

Hi Sun:
The code is different for DOS and Windows. YOu must generate a site code for DOS so we can issue you the Site Key for DOS

Hi Gail,

The hardware that we are currently using is as follows:
   Pentium/PentiumII 200MHz (or greater)
   16 MB RAM (minimum)
2 GB Hard Drive (or greater)
   Iomega Buz Capture Card
   Windows 98

The current software should work on your current hardware, assuming that
you pugrade the software to Windows 95/98. The hard disk that you have 850
MB is getting to be pretty small. I would recommend that you get a minimum
of a 2GB hard drive, preferably 4GB or more.

Do you plan on installing the software on the Pentium 75 computer? Or, are
you going to use a completely new computer and leave the "old" P75 for a
workstation?

The easiest method to purchasse the software would be to send us a check
for the $500 and download the software from the internet. As soon as we
receive full payment for the software, we will issue a SITE KEY (by Email)
to "unlock" the software for unlimited use. Without the SITE KEY, the
software will work for a period of 14 days from installation.

Please contact me for any additional information or if you need a faxed
quotation.

Sincerely,

John Probe

Hello Antonio,

Attached you will find the requested prices to add the Ariel Analog module
to your existing system. Please remember the items we discussed on the
telephone.

   1. There are only 2 slots available (1 ISA and 1 PCI)
   2. The current A/D card we sell is PCI version
   3. If you add a network card, it must be ISA model.
   4. I will check on the compatibility with Bertec Plates.

I recommend that you personally check the computer to make certain that I
am correct.

Listed below you will find the requested quotation.

Please contact me for any additional information.

Sincerely,

John Probe

Hello Dr. Chung,

How are you? We are all doing fine. I will provide answers to your
questions below.

The address for the APAS-DOS manuals is:

You should look in the Appendix section and you will find the file formats.

Hello Doug,

I will provide answers below each of your questions.

There are no problems with downloading the software and transferringit to
any number of computers.  The software downloaded from the internet is
valid for 30 days from the date of installation.  The file that you
download is in a self extracting zip file.

If possible, I would recommend that you install the software on a new
computer.  There are no problems expected, however, I would not want you to
be without an APAS in case there were any problems.

Yes, the new software is 32 bit applications designed for Windows 95/98.
Long file names are fully supported.

Actually, I think you can install the new version in addition to the
existing version.  I will check your equipment file when I get to the
office tomorrow to make certain.

The APAS DOS software can also be downloaded from the internet.  The DOS
software will require an additional Site Key but there is no extra charge.

I hope this information is helpful.  Please contact me for any additional
questions.

Hi Gideon;

Indeed, it was the problem.
I have another problem however: In the process of installing the new version it seems that I lost the capability of transferring the license to another directory. Whenever I execute a program and get to the licensing panel, the license option is not available anymore. I have this on 3 of the 6 workstations I have!  I have attached a jpeg file to show you what I get. Hence, I cannot update these workstations and this is a real drawback!

Also, I reported an installation bug on all workstation but the NT (unable to install APAS on another directory thant that proposed). I think I found the problem. It may be helpful to some of your customers. I don't have the problem if I disconnect the workstation from the networks ( I have a Banyan Vines server and a NT server).

Normand

Hello Paul,

I am writing to inform you that Ariel Dynamics Inc. has received payment in
full ($7,000 USD) for your order of 1 master APAS license and 4 APAS
workstations.

You can download the software directly from the Ariel internet site and
install on your computers.  You only need to download the file one time.
This single file can be used to install the software on ALL your computers.

When you install the software it will be valid for a period of 30 days from
installation.  Anytime during the 30 days, you can supply Ariel Dynamics
with the System Parameter and Site Code numbers for each computer.  We can
use these numbers to generate a Site Key that will "un-lock" your software
for unlimited use.

The System Paramter number is found by selecting the APASCES icon within
the APAS-System folder.  The Site Code can be found by selecting ANY Ariel
software module and pressing the ENTER key when you see the message stating
how many days are left on your trial license.  Accept the license agreement
and then select Display Site Code.

Thank you for your purchase and please do not hesitate to contact me for
any additional information.  I look forward to receiving the information
for your 5 computers.

Sincerely,

John Probe

Hi Normand:
Thank you for your message and it was nice to hear from you.
Of course !!! The Buz already has the SCSI card in it, so you need only to
get the Jaz drive and you can download directly to the cartridge at normal
speed.

Hello Dr. Oscar Rocha Barbosa.

The APAS software was originally desiged to capture images using a computer
controlled VCR.  At this time, only Panasonic manufactured the necessary
VCR with the computer control interface.  For this reason, we standardized
the APAS on the Panasonic equipment.  However, with the new advances in
video technology, the APAS no longer requires the computer controlled VCR.
Images can be captured in Real Time directly to the hard disk using the
Iomega Buz supplied with your system.

Your APAS computer was shipped with APAS98 Revision 9.5 software.  We have
had many improvements and are currently shipping APAS99 Revision 3.5
software.  Ariel Dynamics always provides free software upgrades to our
customers.  Therefore, I recommend that you download the latest version
from the Ariel internet site (/) and install it on your
computer using the following steps.

1.  Select START, SETTINGS and CONTROL PANEL.
2.  Double-Click on the ADD/REMOVE PROGRAMS icon
3.  Select the APAS SYSTEM software and then click on the ADD/REMOVE button.
4.  Click YES to Completely Remove APAS System and all of its components.
5.  Select NO when asked to Remove Shared Files
6.  Select OK and then OK to exit the ADD/REMOVE Programs.
7.  Download the latest version of APAS from / to a
temporary directory.  This file is currently APAS99WIN3_5.EXE
8.  Execute the APAS99WIN3_5.EXE file to decompress the system files to the
C:\TEMP directory.
9.  Select START, RUN and C:\TEMP\SETUP.EXE to install the software,
10.  Select NEXT and YES to accept the License Agreement.
11.  You can enter your name and Company and Serial Number if desired but
this is not required.  Select NEXT to proceed.
12.  Accept the default destination folder of C:\PROGRAM FILES\ARIEL
DYNAMICS\APAS and select NEXT to proceed.
13.  Accept the APAS SYSTEM folder name and select NEXT to proceed.
14.  Select OK to install the program.
15.  Select FINISH to complete the installation.

The APAS SYSTEM folder will be created on the Windows Desktop.  Double
click this folder to access the APAS software modules.

The APAS99 Revision 3.5 software provides two software modules for
capturing images to the hard disk.  These programs are called REALCAP and
CAPTURE.  I recommend that you use the STREAMING function in the CAPTURE
module.  You can access the HELP menu to provide step-by-step intructions
for image capture.

You can also find on-line manuals and Tutorials directly on the Ariel
internet site.

Please feel free to contact me for any additional information.  We are
always happy to help!

Sincerely,

John Probe

Hello Dr. Nissan,

I will provide answers marked Ariel Dynamics, Inc (ADI) below each of your
questions.

ADI:  The Iomega Buz must be installed in a precise order (software first,
then hardware, then an update file).  Was this done correctly?  The precise
instructions are listed on the Ariel internet site at the following address:

/topics/FAQ/I_Omega_Buz_Installation.htm

>1) I got a message it is day 1 of 90.  Does it mean in 90 days I'll have
>to re-enter the same code? another?
>
ADI:  Yes, this message means that you have a 90 day "trial" license.
After the 90 day period, the license can be extended by purchasing a "full"
license.

>2)  I got a black picture  with a green upper-left corner while the VCR
>is on.
>
ADI:  I have not seen any errors like this before.  Please make certain
that the correct steps were followed when installing the Iomgea Buz.  You
should also check the Iomega internet site (www.iomega.com) to make certain
that the Buz will work with your hardware.  There are some known problems
with the Buz and selected hardware.

>3)  I choose "enable" in the capture preferences but could not keep it
>like that next time I was looking at capture.  The same with all other
>choices. How can I keep my choices as preferences?

ADI:  The Enable command allows computer control of the VCR.  It must be
the correct make and model of VCR (Panasonic 7350 or 5700) with the RS-232
connectors.  What is the make and model of the VCR you are connecting to
the APAS.

>4)  The picture remains black but I get a red or orange square at the

>
ADI:  This does not sound familiar.  Make certain that you have the correct
settings under Video Format and Video Source.  This sounds like it might be
set to the wrong format.

Hello Mr. Balmer,

Thank you for your message.  Please provide a detailed explaination as to
why you are "unable to proceed" with operating the APAS software.  This may
help us determine any problems and assist you in operating the APAS system.

Is the problem with the software installation?  Or, in operating the software?
What operating system are you using (Win95/98 WinNT)?

In order to assist customers, each APAS module has an integrated help
screen.  There are also help screens on the Ariel internet site:

/Main/adw-91.html

There is also on-line tutorials at the following address:

/topics/Tutorials/default.htm

I hope this information is helpful.

John Probe

JOHN,

Downloaded the 3mjpeg.zip file from the site you gave me (listed below).
Where should I install this driver??  I assume I can just unzip it in the correct
folder / subdirectory.

Thanks,

Hello Costas Rigas,

I will provide answers below each of your questions.

Sincerely,

John Probe
Email:  ARIEL1@ix.netcom.com

At 12:20 PM 11/17/1999 +0200, you wrote:
>Dear John Probe

Question 1
===========
>Am I right that we need three or four video cameras to achieve 3D bilateral
>gait recording?
>
Answer 1
=========
The software requires a minimum of 2 cameras to obtain 3-dimensional data,
however, there is no limit to the number of cameras that can be used with
the APAS.  Although individual situations vary, most users find that 2 or 3
cameras provide accurate 3D data measurements.  Some users use an
additional camera as a backup (just in case one of the other cameras does
not record for some reason).

Question 2
==========
>What sort of cameras would be needed? Can you indicate prices?
>
Answer 2
=========
The Basic APAS ($11,500) system does not include cameras.  Cameras are sold
as options in addition to the Basic APAS and may include (but not limited
to) any of the following items.

VHS format camcorder(s) $1500 USD per camera
SVHS format camcorder(s) $3500 USD per camera
Digital 60/120Hz camcorder(s) $3500 USD per camera
High Speed (250-2000 Hz) Starting at $15,000 USD per camera

Question 3
===========
>Do we need one frame graber per camera?
>
Answer 3
=========
The Basic APAS includes a single multi-media compatible frame grabber that
is capable of grabbing either NTSC or PAL format video.  Only one frame
grabber is required as each camera view is captured to the computer hard
disk one at a time.  The video source can be a camera, VCR etc.

Question 4
===========
>How many frames per second can the frame graber record?
>
Answer 4
=========
The number of images captured depends upon the video format.  NTSC format
video is  30 frames (or 60 fields) per second while PAL format video is 25
frames (or 50 fields) per second.  The frame grabber is capable of
capturing either of these formats in real-time from a single camera.

The 120 Hz camera provides an additional option of capturing 120 images per
second, however, these images are 1/2 height and can be captured using the
same frame grabber.

Question 5
===========
>Does your software work on both three and four camera setup?
>
Answer 5
=========
See Answer #1 above.  The Basic APAS supports both 2D and 3D data analysis.
The only difference between 2D and 3D is the number of cameras that are
used.  The APAS will support any number of cameras.  Any system that limits
the user to 2D analysis is simply playing marketing games.

Question 6
===========
>Are the reflective markers of special make or we can make our own?
>
Answer 6
=========
There is nothing special about the markers.  They can be made of almost
anything.  The software only requires that there be a good contrast between
the marker and the immediate background.  For example, white markers agains
a black background (or vice versa).

Question 7
===========
>How many markers can your software distinguish?
>
Answer 7
=========
The current version of APAS software supports up to 40 markers.  How many
markers do you require?

Question 8
===========
>Has any Ariel system been deployed in Greece?
>
Answer 8
=========
There are several APAS systems already in Greece.
Democritus University of Thrace
Olympic Athletic Center of Athens (old 286 APAS system)
Aristotalee University of Thessaloniki

HI Tony,

Sorry about the delay.  In answer to your questions, this is the equipment I would suggest for a complete Orthopedic, Physical Therapy Clinic:

1. CES Arm/ Leg/  Back Unit
2. CES Multifunction Unit
3. APAS with Analog function
4. EMG/ on CES and APAS

All the above will be less than one Cybex.

The next step would be to add a force plate.  Gideon will handle pricing with you.

Now you have a complete laboratory capable of  (and I cannot think of all possibilities here):
1. Exercise rehabilitation (closed and open loop).
2. Rehab cardiac training.
3. Rehabilitation test and measurement (bilateral limb comparison).
4. Weight loss work training.
5. Precision athletic training for strength, explosive speed and endurance.
6. Biofeedback for sports and rehabilitation training.
7. Personal fitness and rehab training without the trainer being present (program and walk away, exerciser can take self through program.
8. With addition of APAS, precision measurement of performance for cervical spine, lumbar spine, shoulder, elbow, wrist, and total body gait.
9. Ground reaction forces for gait, sports actions, lift posture.
10. Sports performance evaluations for any sport, including equine.
11. Balance testing and training platform.
12. Dynamic EMG monitoring for Exercise and Performance events.
13. Back to work DELTA lift analysis capability.
14. Job site analysis, etc.

If your funds are limited, CES or APAS first depends on the needs of the clinic.  If primarily training and physical therapy, definitely CES.  If test and measurement orientated, definitely APAS.  However, you cannot beat the combination of tools.

As to report capability, each system has the ability to print any data that appears on the screen.  You can select and combine any combination of data, kinematic, kinetic, CES, etc. for presentation.

Further, you can do like I do, export the raw data and do a custom report on Excel or Matlab.  The advantage of this is that you can have a multi page report, customized, created and recreated in minimal time.  I can help you design these reports.

I am sure Gideon will address costs with you.  I can help you show the cost effectiveness of the equipment and how to get multi level return on your investment.

As I mentioned earlier, if you give me more feedback on the client, I can send you complete reports illustrating how we use the systems for various situations.

Hope this is a helpful start.  I am awaiting your next round of questions.  I am sure you will have many more.  Personally, I would love you to implement a system in SA so we can come back and visit.  I miss the Rock Lobster, Prawns and wine!

Hello Olivier,

We are currently using the STUDIO DV capture board made by Pinnacle
Systems.  However, any frame grabber that is IEEE 1394 "FireWire"
compatible should work with the JVC camera.

The STUDIO DV board includes capturing software, however, the "high-speed"
video has to be extracted into single images.  JVC accomplishes the
"high-speed" by slitting the full size image into either half or quarter
size.  I have attached a description that helps to explain this process.
This is written for NTSC format, but the same principle applies to the PAL
version cameras.

The Ariel Software Drivers for the JVC camera are required to access the
100 and 200 Hz video.  These software drivers are NOT included in the Basic
APAS software and would have to be purchased separately at a cost of
$3,500.00 USD.  NOTE:  Also it is recommended to use the SP mode (not LP
mode) for recordings.

I hope this helps to answer your questions.

Sincerely,

John Probe

Hello Jiji,

Dr. Ariel has forwarded your message to me for a response.  It appears that you have a Sony camera (PAL format).  Once you capture the video to a Microsoft compatible AVI file. the next step is to open the APAS TRIMMER module.  Then follow the steps listed below.

1.  Select FILE, OPEN AVI (or select the AVI icon).
2.  Select OPTIONS, VIDEO to open the Video Options menu.  This menu is used to specify several options.

Field Order - used to specify the order for the video fields to be displayed.  When the video frame is separated into the odd and even field, some computers play the even field first, while others play the odd field first.  This option is used to set the correct order for your computer.  This is a one-time setting for each computer.

Separate Fields - This option is used to indicate whether the fields need to be separated or not.  When using the computer controlled VCR option for video capture, the individual fields are captured separately and this option should be set to NO (since the fields are already separated).  When capturing in real-time, this option is usually set to YES since the entire video frame (consisting of two fields) is captured.

Speed - This option is used to specify the video speed of the captured video.  Unless you are using the JVC High Speed camcorder, this option is usually set to 60/50 Hz.

Additional information on these items can be found in the Trimmer Module pull-down help menu.  Select OPTIONS, and then VIDEO OPTIONS.

Please feel free to contact us for any additional information.

Sincerely,

Hello Gideon

My problem at home with my Sony camera , which is doing only 25 frames
second, is that when I want to trim :
- I 've in the option / video of the trimer "separate fields" yes or no
If I put yes , between two image, I've the a little come back
If I put no , I'll have the 2 image both together .
How can I correct that , and if its'nt possible, what protocole of trim do
you propose me.
How do you functionne when you have not the JVC highspeed camecorder ?.

Have a good night

Jiji

Hello Donna,

There are several programs available for the printing, graphing and export
functions.  A brief description of them is listed below.

APAS2TEXT - used to export the data for each individual point that has been
digitized.  This data is exported to ASCII format so the user can perform
"custom" analysis.

APASVIEW - Used to simultaneously display graphs, video, spreadsheet data.

DISPLAY - Very similar to APASView but also includes ability to export the
graphed data to worksheet format for additional analysis by Lotus, Excel
etc.

Each of these modules also have the Windows pull-down help files for
additional information.

I hope this helps to answer your questions.

Sincerely,

John Probe

Hello Daniel,

This sounds like it might be a problem with the "Image Order" setting.  You
can access this setting in the Trim module by selecting the pull-down Help
menu.  Then select OPTIONS, VIDEO OPTIONS

A brief explaination of this setting (copied from the help file) is listed
below:

===============
FIELD ORDER

A standard video picture is made up of odd and even lines across the screen.
Television standards require these lines to be interlaced.  This means only
half of the lines are displayed in one field.  The first (odd) set of lines
is displayed in the first field while the second (even) set of lines is
displayed in the second field.  These two fields comprise a frame, which is
a complete picture.
Depending on the hardware and software combinations used for recording and
displaying the AVI files, it is possible for the order of the displayed
fields to be reversed.  For this reason, the Ariel TRIM program provides the
option to specify the order for displaying the AVI files.

If it appears that the images are "jerky" or are being displayed in a
"zigzag" manner, the field order probably needs to be reversed.  The field
order is specified using the following steps.

1.  Select the OPTIONS menu to display the list of video options.
Left-click either Normal or Reverse in the FIELD ORDER section.  The current
selection is indicated by the black dot to the left of the option.  NOTE:
When this option is changed, it affects all other APAS software modules
where the AVI file can be displayed (Capture, Digitize, Display, Vectors
etc.)
2.  Select OK to proceed and save changes or CANCEL to abort.

I hope this helps to answer your questions.  Please contact us for any
additional information.

Hello Meghan Spyres,

Thank you for your message.  I have checked the software and everything seems to operate as it should.  If you have 60 Hz video and wish to digitize every tenth image, there there are two settings to be aware of.  The first is in the View Information Menu.  You will see the option for "Frame Rate"  This should be set as follows:

   Frame Rate = 60 Hz / (1 + Skip Value)

In your case, you would like to digitize every 10th image.  In other words, you wish to digitize one image, skip 9 images and digitize another, skip another 9 etc.....

   Frame Rate = 60 Hz / (1+9) = 60/10 = 6

The next point you will see when you open the AVI file in the Digitizing Module.  You will notice a value for "SKIP"
In your situation, this should be set to 9.

Now you digitize normally, however, when you select the Advance command, you will notice that the AVI file will advance by 10 images.  You can also notice the time value in the lower left corner of the digitizing window.  This value will advance by:

   Time Increment =  0.017 seconds/image  x  10 images  =  0.17 seconds

The value of 0.017 seconds represents the time value between images at 60 Hz.

   1/60 = 0.017

I hope this makes sense and corrects the problem you are reporting.  Please refer to the attached file for pictures of the menus mentioned above.  Feel free to contact us for any additional information.

Also, note that the address to our San Diego office changed effective October 5th, 2001. The new address is listed below.  E-mail, telephone and fax information remains unchanged.

ADI:  The real time saving aspect of the current system lies in the
Capture/Synchronizing part.  The Digital Video cameras can be connected
directly to the computer and captured simultaneously using the CAPDV
software module.  This module also lets the user specify an audio
synchronizing event and the time before/after the event for trimming.  Thus
the multiple AVI files are synched and trimmed in one step.  They are now
ready for digitizing.  I am not sure if you are currently using the Windows
Digitizing module, however, this software allows multiple views to be opened
and digitized simultaneously.

I cannot accurately provide a "time savings" number without seeing what is
actually being performed now.  However, you do have the option to download
the software to one of your new computers and test it for 30 days without
any commitment.  (We do not want to load it to an existing APAS computer!)
The computer should be a minimum of a Pentium II, 233 MHz and 64 MB RAM.
This would allows you to "see" and try the software for yourself.  You could
use all the APAS modules, however, if you do not have the digital video
hardware, you would not be able to use the CAPDV module.

ADI:  These prices are correct, however, you should note that JVC has
recently discontinued the High Speed camcorders and the replacement model
does not have the high speed function.  Any Digital Video camcorder that is
IEEE 1394 (FireWire) compliant should work fine with the APAS.  We just used
JVC because of the high-speed options.
