Introduction

The Ariel Performance Analysis System (APAS) is the world's most advanced computerized system for biomechanical analysis and the study of human motion. For the first time, professionals whose work involves the measurement, assessment, or improvement of human performance have, at their disposal, a computerized and fully integrated tool kit for biomechanical measurement and analysis. Areas of successful application for the APAS include athletic performance, injury and rehabilitation assessment, quantification of loss for compensation claims, equipment and product testing and development, determination of potential or actual risks for products and activities in liability litigation, as well as applied research in the areas of orthopedic medicine, therapeutics, and physical training.

The APAS integrates state-of-the-art computer and video processing hardware with specialized software modules that perform data collection, analysis, and presentation. The system has been designed to be user friendly. No special knowledge of computers or data processing is required. At every point during analysis, the user is presented a menu of functions and options that can be immediately performed. Each menu item is accompanied by a brief explanation. A full description of any item may be displayed by pressing the HELP key (question mark).

This manual has been designed as an introduction to the APAS. It explains the overall structure of the system, as well as typical procedures used in performing biomechanical analysis. It provides an overview of each of the modules comprising the system and explains how and why they are used. Finally, it discusses the analytical methods and procedures utilized by the system so that the user may gain an understanding of how results are obtained and what the practical limits of measurement are. Other than the appendices, which are of a technical nature and may be omitted, it is recommended the entire manual be read before use of the APAS.
