From: Lars Oddsson, Ph.D.

Boston, Jan 16, 1998
Mr.
Dy. Director

Dear Mr.

In Nov of 1997, I sent information regarding my experience with Dr. Gideon
Ariel's Motion Analysis System, APAS, to a Mr. Kapoor in India. I do not
know if you are at all affiliated with him but I have enclosed parts of my
letter to him since many of your questions were covered in that letter.
I have had extensive experience with the APAS system and several other
motion analysis systems in my role as a researcher and a coach over the past
15 years, both at my previous department at the Karolinska Institute in
Stockholm, Sweden, the University College of Sports in Sweden and here at
Boston University. We had two APAS systems in Sweden and I currently have
one system here with A/D data collection and two networked workstations for
data analysis. In Sweden we had one of the first Selspot systems in the
world that was used for motion analysis in humans and I also worked with
colleagues on projects with the ELITE system. In Stockholm we used the APAS
to study elite athletes during competition, something that is impossible
with any system that requires markers to be placed on the subject. It is an
apparent advantage with this system that you can work either with reflective
markers and automatic digitization, or in a manual mode and then digitize
any video source such as elite athletes during competition. First and
foremost I think the APAS system is an incredible value for the money. It
comes with an enormous amount of built in features, many of them unique in
the business. One system with force plate and EMG electrodes is enough to
set up a complete biomechanics laboratory for kinematic and kinetic analysis
of human movement as well as neuromuscular function through EMG and ground
reaction analysis. Other systems either don't provide these features at all
or they can only be bought as add-on modules for a high price. I have also
found that customer satisfaction is extremely important for Dr. Ariel and
his company. The few times we have had a problem with the system he has been
extremely fast at responding and helping us to get the system fixed. As a
user I find this to be very important. Dr. Ariel is also very open to
implement suggestions from his customers into his system. If a certain
feature is needed for a project he will work with you to implement it in a
future version of the software. For example, several of the functions in the
current system are the result of input from our research over the past
several years. I have also been very impressed with the A/D system that
comes with the APAS. It is very fast reliable and extremely flexible. In
fact, we use it in the lab for many projects where we only need to collect
EMG or force plate data. At the NeuroMuscular Research Center we have
developed an active differential EMG electrode especially for the APAS
system that has built in amplification (1000) and band-pass filtering. These
electrodes, by most considered the best surface EMG electrodes on the
market, are now commercially available with the APAS system and I can highly
recommend them. They have extremely low noise (<5 micro Volts p-p) and a
very high common mode rejection (~100). In fact, these electrodes can even
be used with no skin preparation to record single motor units from the
surface of the skin. These electrodes function very well with the APAS
system. We also use them separately with the APAS input box in the battery
powered mode as a portable self contained 16 channel EMG system at a price
which is absolutely unbeatable in the business.
Dr. Ariel is a pioneer in the area of motion analysis systems who has worked
in this field for over three decades. In my experience, he is dedicated to
provide the best products and service for full customer satisfaction.
Therefor, I can certainly recommend the purchase of the APAS system.
To specifically address your questions, I think most of them are answered
above. However, I have summarized the responses to your questions below.
1. Has the equipment been functioning trouble free?

Essentially yes. However, there are ALLWAYS some minor problems with ANY
system involving advanced technology and computers. These have been simple
to fix.

2. Is the equipment useful for the analysis of the techniques of various
sports disciplines?

Definitively yes.

3. How many frames per second?

This will depend on your camera system. The APAS will support any frame rate
that your hardware, i.e. camera system can handle. We have used regular
video cameras which in Sweden gave us 50Hz and in the US 60 Hz. However,
video cameras supporting 120, 240 and even 1000 Hz are available at higher
costs.

4. Year of purchase and cost?

In Sweden we acquired the systems around 1991 and I acquired the system here
when I arrived in 1993. You will have to contact the company directly for
price information.

5. Does the company attend promptly to the repairs whenever there is a
problem with the equipment?

As I mentioned above the problems have been minor but yes, the company has
provided excellent service.

6. Does the company upgrade the system periodically free of charge?

Yes.

7. Do you recommend to purchase the 3-D Motion Analysis of Ariel Dynamics

Yes.

Please feel free to contact me for additional information.

Sincerely,

 Lars Oddsson, Ph.D.
